Why So Much Hype?

Last week, I saw "The Hunger Games" and recently started reading the book. It is great, however, it got me thinking...

Sometimes I find it strange the movies and things that get so much hype.

Personally, my favorite type of movies are comedies and light-hearted movies. Of course, I do have some favorite drama, action, etc. types of movies. But really, I just tend to get so anxious and sad on my own, so why do I want to watch movies that will make me feel depressed or scared?

I suppose part of me understands why movies like "Twilight" and "The Hunger Games" gain such a following and almost an obsession. They have action, romance, comedy and basically everything you could want in a movie. Once someone starts becoming obsessed with it in the media, it spirals out of control.

What do you think? Do you think the hype of certain movies is overrated? Do you wish other movies had more hype? Tell me your thoughts!

  1. I read the book and I'm halfway through the next one. I haven't seen the movie. I think it is important that the participants don't want to participate. The Hunger Games are a cruel spectacle inflicted on the country by a government that doesn't serve its citizenry well. The sympathetic main character doesn't want to win, just to survive.

    1. I just finished the first book and am on to the second. I think reading the books helped me understand it better.

  2. I LOVE the Hunger Games...but does it deserve the hype? I don't know. I thought the movie was good, but the books aren't written very well (especially the last one...).

I think there are so many books/movies that deserve the hype that the Hunger Games has gotten, but for some reason they aren't as marketable (have you ever read His Dark Materials? It's my favorite series ever but the movie bombed). It's kind of sad.

    1. I agree. There are so many movies I love that no one else seems to notice or care about! Just strange which movies get hype and which do not. I've never read that book... I'll look it up, thanks! :)

  3. I loved the first and the second book! Mockingjay was kind of a disappointment and very depressing. I usually like to read the books before the movie so I can understand the story better-movies sometimes skip a few parts that I felt should have been in it. The movie was done well I think, a lot of it was how I pictured it. The whole idea of the games is sickening but I like the whole dystopian setting and rebelling against the cruel government. This movie got so much hype that there's even a nail polish line based off of it!
