Being Independent

The other day I was watching "Made" featuring twins heading into college who wanted to be made into independent sisters. They were so connected they slept in the same bed and felt anxiety any time they were apart.

Let me tell you, that concept is SO weird for me. That's because I'm an only child. My parents have been great and I'm especially close to my mom, but the older I get, the more independent I've become. I wouldn't have it any other way.

Most people I talk to feel too weird to go to a restaurant or a movie alone. I'm cool with it. Especially in times of school when my friends and boyfriend are busy and my parents are at work, I spend a lot of time with just me.

I admit that things are always much more fun with other people but I definitely require time by myself. Sometimes if I am busy and running around with other people, I just crave time alone.

Do you feel something similar? Any other only children out there?

  1. Fellow only child here! And I totally know what you mean. I used to get upset that I had no siblings and feel all sad about it. Family vacations would certainly be a million times more fun if there was someone my age. I'll never know what it's like to have a sisterly or brotherly connection. But now I'm starting to realize more and more how much I actually like being an only child a lot of times. I really do like my fair share of alone time, and I feel like I'm way more independent now than I used to be.

  2. Yay, gotta represent for the only children! I actually don't really remember wanting a sibling, but I do remember having dreams about being terrified I would! hah! I think independence is better and it allows us to make great friends who are like sisters/brothers. :)
